vision 21 and the building rural leaders program
Vision 21 began as the alumni of the Queensland Building Rural Leaders program (BRL). Recently our Constitution has been changed to invite past participants from similar leadership programs to join our community as members. 'Similar' means programs that share similar values, principles, concepts, language and process elements as BRL - particularly, a strong emphasis on everyone leading, learning from experience, learning together and multi-module learning events, with action-learning sets leading themselves to learn in between modules - developing interdependent learning.
Although the Queensland Government's Building Rural Leaders program ceased operation in 2010 past-participants still stay in contact to support each other and maintain the practice of leadership principles learned there.
During more than a decade, over 1300 people attended the nine month program, not only building their confidence and skills to lead themselves and others, but importantly, building a network of proactive people across the State who have maintained their relationships over the years. Over 160 past participants have chosen to formally consolidate this network by becoming members of the BRL past participants' association, Vision 21.
Action Learning Sets are still meeting over fifteen years since their formation. People with shared understanding, knowledge and tools, continue to support each other to learn and grow, and to be there as a critical friend when challenges must be faced, or when opportunities are taken up.
